The Ferrari 512S was new for 1970, and featured space-frame aluminum and steel construction, powered by a detuned (for reliability in endurance racing) Type 261 5-liter V12 engine, derived from Ferrari’s Formula 1 program. At Sebring that day, Ferrari was facing equally new Porsche 917s — with 580 horsepower, flat twelve engines, and a close-to-200 pound weight advantage. Porsche had overwhelmed Ferrari at Daytona with top speed; Ferrari hoped to use superior handling and lightened “Spyder” bodies to get things even again on Sebring’s many curves.
