From Laurence King Publishers With Illustrations by Nigel Peake
This understated, leather-bound journal seems, at first glance, decades removed from our fast-paced, interconnected existence. But a closer look at this little gem reveals more than just the traditional lined paper (though there is plenty of that, too).
Blank pages, graphs, mileage charts, elevation charts, duration charts, and geometric designs take up a few pages and give you something to noodle with when feeling uninspired (or overly diligent). There is also a puncture tracker with columns for front and rear tires to keep tabs on how many times you flat (or not) along your journey. As if this weren’t enough, there are little envelopes (attached to perforated tabs should you want to remove them) interspersed through the middle pages for collecting tangible items.
All of this is accompanied by the wonderful illustrations of bicycle accoutrements, stylized landscapes, and geometric patterns by Nigel Peake that serve as inspiration as you fill the pages with your own stories and insight. Whether you use it up on one long adventure or simply flip through it for the images, this is a must-have for anyone who enjoys cycling and art. Available online for $14.95 — it would be a bargain for twice the price. –Stephen Haynes
