The Ford Edge sees few changes for 2013, as it was recently freshened inside and out. The most noteworthy developments are the availability of all-wheel drive across the model range and an available sport mode on the six-speed automatic transmission. Like last year, Edge buyers have the choice of three engines. The 240-hp, 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is the fuel-economy champ, with an EPA estimated 30 mpg on the highway. Other engine choices are a 285-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 and a 305-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 that is exclusive to the Sport. The Sport also has a specially tuned suspension, a six-speed paddleshift automatic, and standard 22-inch wheels. Besides having a comfortable and versatile interior, the Edge drives quite well. The steering is well tuned, with excellent on-center response and a natural effort buildup that’s atypical for a crossover. The Edge was the first Ford equipped with Sync, and it is available on every trim level. The MyFord Touch interface lets drivers access the functions through a touch-screen color display, but it takes some time to become familiar with and can be distracting due to the inability to make needed adjustments based on feel and touch. The Edge won’t replace a minivan, but it could be the ideal car for those who’ve moved beyond carpooling duties but still want rear-seat space and cargo capacity.

All-wheel drive is now available in the base SE, and the six-speed automatic transmission is available with a sport mode. The SEL can now be had with a body-color grille, unique floor mats and leather-trimmed seats with Alcantara inserts, and special twenty-inch wheels. Some new colors are available: deep impact blue metallic, Kodiak brown metallic, and ruby red metallic tinted charcoal.
Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; a tire-pressure monitoring system; programmable MyKey; and blind-spot mirrors are standard. BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert is optional. The SOS Post-Crash Alert System sounds the horn if the air bags have deployed.
