Finally, a modern full-size sedan from Chevy.

After years of being neglected, the Impala gets the attention it deserves with a full-blown redesign that brings the fifty-year-old nameplate into this century. We haven’t yet driven the new car, but the 2014 Impala appears to be a vast improvement over the homely vehicle it replaces. It wears the slightly generic new face of Chevy cars — similar to the mug worn by the redesigned Traverse crossover — and although some of the details are a bit fussy, its profile is quite nice: even our hard-to-please design editor, Robert Cumberford, called it “sleek.” Although the Impala’s tall sides, narrow windows, and fastback-like rear cause it to look larger, the new car is in fact within an inch of the outgoing car in every dimension. Not surprisingly, it weighs significantly more than the car it replaces. Fortunately, the Impala boasts a trio of new engines that should handily offset the negative effect the extra weight will have on performance and fuel economy. The new powerplants are more powerful versions of the 2.4-liter mild hybrid and 2.5-liter in-line four that are found in the Malibu, as well as a V-6 that is estimated to produce more than 300 hp. The Impala’s interior mimics the Malibu’s dual-cockpit design, but Chevy promises more leather and soft-touch surfaces in the Impala.

Front, side, and side curtain air bags are standard, as are traction and stability control, ABS, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Optional safety features are blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and collision-mitigation braking.
