Land Rover Range Rover

Fit for a king.

As much as we loved the previous Range Rover, it was morbidly obese. For 2013, the ultimate luxury SUV goes on a serious diet, and curb weights drop as much as 926 pounds, depending on trim level. The incredible weight loss primarily comes from the all-aluminum unibody construction and should be a boon to fuel economy. Land Rover uses the same 5.0-liter naturally aspirated and supercharged engines as last year, rated at 375 hp and 510 hp, respectively, but both engines are backed by a new eight-speed automatic transmission that also increases fuel economy. Yes, even the biggest luxury SUVs now need to make serious strides in fuel economy. Don’t worry, Land Rover hasn’t gone soft. All Range Rovers are still all-wheel drive and come standard with the adaptive Terrain Response system as well as low-range gearing. Another familiar aspect of the new Range Rover is its exterior design. Although the SUV gets more aerodynamic looks, there’s still a large greenhouse, blacked-out pillars, and the distinctive side gills. Inside, the Range Rover gets a more contemporary interior that features increased rear-seat legroom of 4.7 inches, and a pair of second-row individual seats can be ordered in place of the traditional bench.

Almost everything is new. There are 4.7 more inches of rear-seat legroom, a much more modern interior, an evolutionary exterior design, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The standard automatic Terrain Response system adjusts to whatever surface is being traversed without the driver manually dialing in a program. A revised air suspension is supposed to aid driver confidence.


Front, side, side curtain, and thorax air bags; ABS; stability and traction control; electronic brake assist; rear park-distance control; trailer-stability assist; and rain-sensing wipers are standard. A 360-degree camera system, active headlights, automatic-high-beams, and blind-spot monitoring are optional.
