Jaguar F-type

At last, a successor to the E-type.

The F-type convertible, Jaguar’s long-awaited sports car, will arrive just in time for spring. And it looks good. A low, sleek deck lid and thin LED taillights accentuate voluptuous rear fenders and pay subtle tribute to the E-type. The power soft top lowers in twelve seconds into a compartment in front of the trunk. The seductive skin and the underlying architecture are formed of aluminum. The top engine is Jaguar’s familiar 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, which produces 495 hp. The base engine is a new 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 that will produce 340 hp in the base F-type and 380 hp in the F-type S. The latter model, along with the line-topping F-type V8 S, has a limited-slip differential and adaptive dampers. The two-seat interior is modern with not a hint of wood trim, but it pays tribute to classic sports cars with analog gauges and purposeful controls. A traditional-looking automatic shifter allows the driver to manually select gears on the eight-speed automatic. There is no manual available at the moment, but Jaguar says it will consider making one available over the life of the vehicle. We’ll need seat time to determine how the new Jag stacks up against the sports car elite, but with an estimated $70,000 base price and three engines, it should make for a seductive alternative to the cheaper Porsche Boxster and the more expensive Porsche 911.

We don’t yet have the complete rundown on safety equipment, but we will see all the government mandated items, such as front and side air bags, stability and traction control, ABS, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
