Infiniti M

A very luxurious luxury sedan.

Simply put, we’re fans of the Infiniti M. When the M37 and the M56 came out for 2011, the huge improvement over their smaller-displacement predecessors, the M35 and the M45, was obvious. The M37’s 330-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 actually has five more hp than the V-8 in the old M45. The top-of-the-line M56 features a 5.6-liter V-8 that pumps out 420 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque, massive gains of 95 hp and 81 lb-ft over the previous V-8. Last year, Infiniti added an M35h Hybrid to the mix; it can drive on electric power alone at speeds up to 62 mph. For 2013, the news isn’t radical. Infiniti decided to spend its time futzing with packages rather than powertrains. This is the first time the Sport Package is offered with all-wheel-drive models. The package adds twenty-inch aluminum wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, sport brakes, solid magnesium paddle shifters, sport seats with more bolstering, a unique front fascia, a sixteen-speaker Bose audio system, a power rear sunshade, and the Forest Air climate control system. The M cabin is lavishly trimmed with materials that befit a luxury car, but back-seat space is snug. We’re willing to compromise rear-seat space a bit here, however, for the dramatic proportions and styling, which help this car stand out in a way that the previous version never did.

All M models now have auto-dimming exterior mirrors and an automatic trunk “cincher.” The Sport Package is offered with all-wheel-drive models, and the Premium Package now includes a rear sonar system and Infiniti connection. Sport stone is now offered as an interior color for Sport models. A twenty-inch performance tire and wheel package replaces the previous eighteen-inch wheel package.

Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; and traction and stability control are standard. Blind-spot warning and intervention systems; lane-departure warning and prevention systems; intelligent cruise control with brake assist and forward-collision warning; and precrash front seatbelts are optional.
